Fall 2010 studio design was a small housing development on a site with significant geographical features and more actual square footage than is necessary for the required amount of built-up area. The studio was not a “housing” studio in the strictest sense, but rather an opportunity to explore the relationship between building form and site context through the medium of housing. We were expected to learn about and implement various urban strategies on what might otherwise be considered a suburban (or rural) site. We were also obliged to develop a strategy for all areas of the site: the landscape must be addressed in our design from the very beginning.
